Power of the Scythe

Some of us went to the Green Scythe Fair near Muchelney last Sunday. The weather was perfect for the atmosphere of this friendly and laid-back event.

The main attraction was obviously the scything competitions, culminating in the West Country Scythe Championship. But there were also lots of demonstrations and events including hay stacking, willow weaving, stone-carving and forging, not to mention a couple of music areas and green-friendly debates and workshops. Children were particularly well catered for with events and play areas.

A myriad of stalls sold food and drink, crafts, plants, gardening tools and even coffins - made of willow. We bought some plants and a grass hook for the allotment but there was a lot to be tempted by. If you cycled to the fair you got a free bike MOT, tea and cake and, if you are Isabelle (plot 15), you talked your way in for free too!

Many thanks to Kim (plot 20) for advertising this event on the allotment notice board. It was a great day and we will definitely be going again next year.
