Break In

The darkest note in the year so far was the break-in at the allotments last Saturday week. Tools and equipment were stolen from several sheds and plots. One shed door was also damaged when it was forced open and the padlock taken.

It is hard to imagine the sort of person who would steal from a community allotment where most plot-holders are either retired or have young families and find it hard enough to make ends meet. Our tools tend to be old but serviceable and much-loved; often handed down through generations or bought years ago and not easily replaced.

The people who have allotments are generally those who either do not have a garden at all or maybe just a small garden at home and are simply trying to grow food for themselves and their families. A lot of time and hard work goes into maintaining an allotment and it is very upsetting that someone should decide to steal from us.

This sort of theft does not affect just one or two people but has a knock-on effect throughout the community.

The local police have been fully informed and are investigating, so if anyone has any further information please do pass it on to them.
