Keep on Scything

Big man, big scythe! George Montague from Somerset - joint winner of the 2014 West Country Scything Championships

We went to the Green Scythe Fair at Muchelney again last weekend. Luckily, the initial forecast for torrential rain dissolved into the blue skies and sunshine so typical of the levels.

As always, it was a good day out with a good choice of stalls and eateries, demonstrations, crafts and entertainment. Children are always very well catered for at this event, with several areas devoted to creating and playing. The whole fair is run on wind, sun and muscle-power which makes it feel very tranquil and laid-back.

This year I thought there seemed to be less emphasis on the scything championships, although maybe I just didn't hear the announcements. The message that scything is better than strimming was still prominent though: quieter, greener, quicker and better exercise.

There were definitely more green skills workshops this year, with a yurt devoted to sessions throughout the day including plenty of carbon-cutting advice; how to repair and mend, and how to make compost. There was also more about community and sustainable living, with very good information stands by Tinkers Bubble and Monkton Wyld Court.

It was lovely to bump into several other allotment-holders there including Isabelle (plot 15) who had once again cycled to the event, Jon and Morag (plot 20) and Paul & Jinny (plot 23B) with their respective families.

Once again, we resisted buying a scythe but I did get a second-hand trowel and some more herbs.
