Strawberries Galore!

It seems as though this year lots of people have all grown perpetual strawberries. Everywhere you go at the allotments there are beautiful luscious fruits - and it's October!

Perpetual-fruiting strawberries - or everbearers, as they are sometimes called, flower and produce fruit over the whole season, but in smaller quantities than traditional plants. In fact, they are more like wild or alpine strawberries in this habit. "Assuming you don't want to make jam then perpetual strawberries are better because you avoid the whole glut/famine situation", says John, whose daughter Laura has grown them on plot 16.

Meanwhile, Jon and Morag on plot 20 are giving away strawberry plants. Jon said, "We have loads. Just leave a pot of soil on the plot (labelled) and we will put a runner in it for you."

So, there's no excuse not to be eating your own this time next year.
