Winter is Coming...

It has been so unseasonably mild so far this winter that many of the plants both at the allotment and at home have got a little confused and have started budding and even flowering.

A couple of frosts, followed by warmer weather, has fooled them into thinking that winter has been and gone and they are bursting into spring mode. Meanwhile, many of the winter hardy plants such as brussels sprouts and cauliflowers have matured early. Normally, the colder weather would slow their growth and prolong the harvest.

For anyone who has planted crops for over-wintering, such as broad beans and garlic, the mild weather has allowed them to get off to a good start. However, this could leave the plants too exposed when winter does finally arrive. So keep an eye on these crops - and the weather forecast - and be prepared to cover them in the case of a prolonged cold spell.
