Toilet (roll) Training

Not quite as dodgy as it sounds! The cardboard tubes in the middle of toilet rolls have many uses, and for anyone growing their own crops, can double up as deep root modules. Some plants such as peas and beans benefit from a deeper root trainer, but buying these expensive items can be avoided if you save the 'end of the roll'.

In order to stop the toilet rolls disintegrating before you have chance to plant the seedlings out, keep them together in some kind of container. You should be able to water them then without problems.

Obviously plastic modules are more robust and will survive rougher handling, but sometimes that's a bad thing. Sweetcorn, parsnips and carrots don't like to be disturbed after sowing, so you can just plant the whole cardboard tube in the ground and it will break down naturally.

So, if you don't have a hamster, now you know what to do with them. Start saving them now to have enough for sowing later in spring!
