Ode to Compost

A poem in recognition of Compost Awareness Week this week, and a few photos of some of our favourite composting bins at Plain Pond. It is great to see the majority of plot-holders are now having a go at making their own compost.

Welcome to compost awareness week
What better time to start a new heap!
Your own compost is easy to make
Mix the ingredients just like making a cake:
Vegetable peelings, leaf mulch and fruit,
Seaweed and wood ash, throw in some roots,
Add your kitchen waste, eggshells and all
And cut hedge-trimmings up really small
A layer of grass clippings, coffee grounds too
Pee is good, but remember, no poo!
Be wary of teabags as they don’t rot down
And any cooked food will cause us to frown
As rats like nothing better than to eat
That old smelly fish and gone-off meat
No couch or docks to introduce weeds
Then heat it all up to kill off the seeds
Turn the heap over at least once completely
To help it all decompose down more neatly
Finish it off, and wait for a year
It’s amazing how much will just disappear!
Cover it over to keep off the rain -
Carpet or plastic will work just the same
Then, when it’s ready, crumbly and brown
Spread it thickly all over the ground
Your crops will grow big, healthy and strong
And all for free, what can go wrong?
You’ll never be sorry you started that heap
To celebrate compost awareness week.
