Autumn Harvest

We recently stayed in the New Forest with a couple who have very minimalist décor. They would be horrified by a visit to our house at the moment where every available surface is covered with harvested vegetables.

It's worth remembering, if you are trying to be self-sufficient in growing your own food, that you need plenty of room to store it! There are potatoes in the garage; onions in the greenhouse; garlic and shallots in the summerhouse; squashes in the windowsills, and beans for drying - waiting to be shelled - everywhere.

In the past I've strung onions in the woodshed but got fed up with bashing my head on them every time I went out for logs.

Now the frosts have started we also have to think about bringing the remaining carrots, beetroot, swede and celeriac inside to store over winter, and then there's the oca, and the yacon...
