No Dig Pilgrimage

If you choose to not dig your plot, then you have more time to do other things. We recently visited Charles Dowding's garden to see how no dig organic gardening can yield amazing results! He's gradually been adding to the 'plot' over the years and now produces an interesting and diverse array of crops.

As a gardener, some years I've found that some crops do better than others, but Charles tends to have no obvious failures and everything looks healthy. Really interesting and humbling to see how it is done properly on a large and diverse scale such as this.

Charles employs a scientific approach to his experiments and we were interested this year in his comparison of different types of compost. The results were quite surprising. The 'small garden project' which was created last year is completely inspiring, as is the outdoors hot bed complete with chilli's, aubergines, peppers and melon.

Around 1,000 people visited over the course of the afternoon and we met lots of lovely people who'd travelled especially from as far as Manchester and Wales. As always, it was fun chatting to other like-minded people and swapping stories and growing tips in a convivial atmosphere.

Oh, and we are definitely going to try growing Elephant Garlic next year after seeing Charles' fantastic harvest!
