Hedge Working Party

Over a dozen of us joined forces yesterday to carry out repairs to the North boundary of the allotment site. Deer have been getting through the hedge here, straight into the allotments, and enjoying a free meal of our vegetables!

Lena organised the working party into groups and we filled the gap securely from both sides with cut branches and old pallets. While some people cut more branches, others used them to make a temporary barricade along the fence into the rugby ground. Other members donated wire netting and strung it along the bank as a further deterrent.

It was a lovely sunny day and, with many hands and a shared purpose, the work was soon finished. It was also a nice opportunity to meet and chat with other members and felt satisfying to be doing something constructive about this problem.

The final step is to properly deer-proof the fence. Julie has approached the council with a request to purchase the necessary materials. We then plan to organise another work day soon to finish the job.
