Rainwater Harvesting

We may all be fed up with the rain now, but when we're facing another drought next year we'll no doubt be doing a rain dance and wishing for water. Collecting rainwater during the wet winter weather and storing it is the obvious solution.

If you have a shed on your plot it's relatively easy to collect water from the roof into a couple of  barrels. As these fill up, transfer it into further containers. Situated out on the plot, they can be filled now and used later as dunk tanks. For health and safety reasons, all water storage containers must have a securely fitted lid.

No shed? Try rigging up a canopy. Even a small sheet will collect a good amount of rain, and will double up as a sun-shade next summer. Check out Freecycle, Gumtree or Ebay for used canopies.

Alternatively, get inventive with collection funnels straight into your holding reservoir. An upside down dustbin lid with a hole in the middle would work beautifully. Once you start thinking about it, the possibilities are endless.

You could also consider installing some raised barrels and a gravity-fed drip system for watering part of the plot as John has on 16B.

Whatever you do, now is the time to start putting it all into place. Water is an increasingly precious commodity and we need to do all we can to save and use it wisely.
