Hedge Laying Training

The ground is far too wet to do much on the plots, but other work around the site is keeping us all busy.

On Saturday, a group met up for some hedge laying training and then spent a fruitful few hours tackling the far hedgerow. The event was organised by Lena and kindly led by Jon, who brought his expertise and some specialist equipment. The rest of us brought old tools, enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in.

Jon organised everyone into pairs with specific tasks, and two types of laying techniques were used on different areas of the hedge. It was good fun and the result is a thicker, stronger hedge, particularly at the base, which will help keep the pesky deer out of the allotments and away from our vegetables!

Lena brought tea and cake, which provided a much needed break, then it was back to work. There were a variety of jobs, some of which were less demanding so everyone could get involved. Well done, and many thanks to all who turned up to help, including a few friends.

Later, we will add barricades and in the autumn, some hedging plants to fill any remaining gaps. For anyone who couldn't make it, another work day is planned very soon.
