Planting an Edible Hedge

On a wet and windy December afternoon a few volunteers from the allotments and rugby club braved the elements to plant 400 saplings to form a hedge on the rugby pitch side of our boundary fence (more pics below).

Lena applied to The Woodland Trust for a free hedge pack which the trust kindly supplied along with tree guards and canes. We chose an edible hedge pack which gave us a mix of Hazel, Crab Apple, Rowan, Blackthorn and Dog Rose. This should provide us with an attractive and productive hedge in a few years time which will be great for wildlife and will also help keep out marauding Roe Deer!

Very many thanks to Lena for organising everything and to Jon for giving us all a quick masterclass in tree planting.
