Newt News

Fran and Ben have discovered lots of wildlife on the overgrown plot they've recently taken over - mostly toads which they've safely relocated. They were busy clearing and digging this weekend when Ben was lucky to spot this little smooth (or common) juvenile newt.

Fran says it was buried quite deep in the soil and was very sluggish. Although they don't strictly hibernate, newts do burrow down to shelter from the harsh winter. We checked the wildlife factsheet in the communal shed and decided to put the newt in the bottom of a compost heap where it would be undisturbed.

The last time we had a photo of a newt on the website was 2014. It's good to know they're still here!
